Navigating the Complexities of Translation: A Peek Behind the Scenes

Translating might seem like a straightforward job to an outsider. You take words from one language and turn them into another. Simple, right? Well, as I recently discovered, it can be far more intricate than most anticipate, especially when graphics and symbols are involved.

When I first engaged with a translator on a recent project, I confidently estimated the workload. Yet, as the work progressed, I found myself deeply immersed, dedicating close to 20 labor-intensive hours. The complexities lay not just in the linguistic nuances but also in the non-textual elements of the content. The project contained 112 broken graphics of machine console displays. On top of that, about 30 symbols had to be crafted from scratch. These challenges were unexpected, adding layers of intricacy to an already demanding task.

Reflecting on our initial discussion about the manual, the translator and I hadn’t set any firm boundaries. We didn’t cap the working hours or settle on a fixed price. Such oversights can be dangerous, leading to misunderstandings and potentially straining professional relationships.

Given the unforeseen complications, I realize my initial fee might need reconsideration. Yet, I also understand that the project budget has its constraints. Striking a balance between compensation and budgetary limits is the next challenge, and it underscores the importance of clear communication from the get-go.

This experience has been an eye-opener. Translation isn’t just about words; it’s about context, culture, graphics, symbols, and more. As with any project, open dialogue, setting clear expectations, and flexibility are crucial. Always expect the unexpected and remember that behind every translation lies a journey of understanding and collaboration.
